Ian Harris
Ian, when did you first start refereeing?
1981
And what were the first leagues you officiated on?
I have referee'd on several starting in warrington
before moving onto the Liverpool County Comb, the Northwest Counties before being promoted onto
Football League line and then coming back to the warrington leagues.
What is your current level Ian?
Level 5 or the old class 1
Being a liverpool referee is it fair to assume you support one of the cities sides?
Yes! I support Liverpool with my favorite player being captain Steven Gerrard
Are you married and if so do you have any children?
Iam married yes, and have 3 sons aged 25 and 22 year old twins
So whats you occupation if you dont mind me asking, and do you have any hobbies other than football?
I work as a Engineering Asset Controller for an Industrial gas Company and i dont have time for other hobbies
Ian, we have all witnessed events that are memorable, what is your most memorable footballing event, that you have been involved in and one that you havent?
My most memorable event i wasnt involved in has to be Liverpool v AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League Final, and for the one i was involved in has to be Liverpool v Everton in the Liverpool County Senior Cup, which i referee'd
Now we all have had controversial moments, tell us one of yours
It was in an FA Cup game between Millwall and Shrewsbury with Eddie Wolstenholme as referee, i flagged for the goalkeeper handling the ball outside of the area who subsequently got sent off only to have the Millwall supporters trying to climb over the barriers to me
Nearly finished now, What is your refereeing ambition and do you have a favourite referee?
My ambition is to complete 30 years as a referee and my favourite referee is the now retired Keith Cooper
What do you dislike most about football and refereeing?
The television pundits and managers who dont know the Laws of the game, which are availible for download on this website
And finally Ian, do you have any advice for newly qualified or aspiring referees?
The two main ways to gain experience are by refereeing and listening to experiences, this is best done at Society where it can be openly discussed amongst friends. Never referee for marks always referee to the Laws of the game with a little common sense thrown in. Don't look for trouble it will find you soon enough!
